Vector Solutions Hosts Webinar to Explore the Role of Leadership in Supporting Social and Emotional Learning
During April 7 webinar, consultant Katherine Plog Martinez will discuss how to describe your SEL program, the importance of adult SEL, and how to create community partnerships
Tampa, FL – April 5, 2022 – Social and emotional learning (SEL) is a significant focus of schools, yet these programs have also become a subject of controversy. Vector Solutions, the leading provider of training and software solutions to help schools make their operations and communities safer, smarter and better, is hosting a free webinar at 1 p.m. Eastern Time on April 7, 2022 to explore “The Role of Leadership in Supporting Social-Emotional Learning.” During the webinar, Katherine Plog Martinez, managing partner for the consulting firm Knowledge to Power Catalysts, will lead a discussion about the importance of the language used when building social-emotional learning programs, the importance of adult SEL, and how to partner with community organizations to support SEL. “Social-emotional learning programs have become the latest target in education culture wars, yet the science of learning and development makes it clear that all learning is social and emotional,” said Plog Martinez in describing the webinar. “Students need foundational relationships, a sense of safety and belonging, and more for their brains to be primed to actively engage in learning. And likewise, adults need the opportunity to practice and develop their own social and emotional skills to most effectively support their students and maintain their own focus and well-being.”
Donna McMullin, Vector’s Vice President of Product Marketing, Education, added: “Having strong programs in place to support the social and emotional wellbeing of both students and staff is critical to keeping schools safe and helping students succeed, both in and out of the classroom. So it’s important for districts to be intentional about framing their SEL programs in a way that sets them up for success. This webinar is a great opportunity to discuss these issues and develop strategies to help districts do this work.”
During the webinar Plog Martinez will discuss:
- The foundational science of learning and development and how language and terminology can help or hinder the framing of social-emotional learning programs
- The importance of developing social and emotional skills and competencies in all adults in the school building and concrete strategies for building adult-focused social-emotional practices
- How to partner, align, and coordinate with community-based organizations to support social-emotional learning programs
The webinar will also be available on-demand.
Plog Martinez is managing partner of Knowledge to Power Catalysts, a small boutique consulting firm that “increases the rate at which leaders transform Knowledge into Power to change the odds that all children and youth will thrive.” She previously spent eight and a half years at Denver Public Schools (DPS) where her roles included Director of Extended Learning and Community Schools and Executive Director of Whole Child Supports.
