Vernier Software & Technology Helps Educators and Students Celebrate Brain Awareness Week
Activities and resources can be used to teach students about neuroscience and human physiology during Brain Awareness Week March 11–17, 2019
BEAVERTON, Oregon, March 11, 2019 — Vernier Software & Technology has compiled a collection of resources and activities to help educators and students celebrate Brain Awareness Week during the week of March 11–17, 2019. Educators can use the new Human Physiology Experiments lab book, free downloadable slides highlighting various brain tissues, and more during the weeklong global campaign designed to increase public awareness of the progress and benefits of brain research.
“Brain Awareness Week is a perfect time to introduce high school students to neuroscience, as well as brain anatomy and physiology,” said John Wheeler, CEO of Vernier Software & Technology. “By being able to visualize abstract concepts and to engage in hands-on learning using data-collection technology, students are able to make important scientific connections about the incredible functionality of the brain.”
To teach students about brain structure, Vernier has compiled a collection of downloadable slides highlighting real-life images of brain tissue from different brain regions, in addition to providing tips to help teachers incorporate these slides into their lessons. The images include Golgi stained Purkinje cells, ox motor neurons, Cajal stained spinal cord, Cajal stained cerebellum, and more.
Vernier developed the “Balance” experiment, which is found in the Human Physiology Experiments lab book, to teach students about this specific brain function. During the activity, students use the Go Direct® Force and Acceleration Sensor to detect movement while a subject balances on two legs and then on one leg, first with eyes open and then closed.
The complete Human Physiology Experiments lab book, which is available in both electronic and print formats, features 14 ready-to-use experiments that help high school and college students investigate the physiology of the cardiac, muscular, respiratory, vascular, and nervous systems. It provides teachers with electronic access to the most up-to-date versions of all of the experiments, as well as word-processing files of student pages so teachers can edit the experiments to match their teaching styles. It also includes helpful teaching tips, suggested answers, and sample data and graphs.
